The Moulton TSR 2 Specification has been released. This model features a 2 speed Sturmey Archer S2C hub, with kick-back shifting and a coaster (or back pedal-) brake. This means that there are no cables running to the rear wheel, and allows the frame to be split more quickly for storage and transportation.

The initial prototypes, which were shown last year, featured a belt drive, eliminating the maintenance and dirt associated with chain drives.

However, the production TSR 2 is available with a choice of either belt drive or a standard chain drive. The belt drive model features a Delta 11mm belt, 67 tooth chainring and 25 tooth sprocket, providing approximately 50.6 and 69.9 inches.

The chain drive features a 44 tooth chainring and 17 tooth sprocket, giving gears of approximately 48.9 inches and 67.5 inches.

The TSR 2 weights 12kgs, and also features folding pedals and Avid Single Digit 5 front V-brakes.

The Moulton Bicycle Company Website says

Beautiful simplicity – the TSR 2 features the new Sturmey-Archer ‘kick-shift’ two-speed gear with an integrated back-pedal brake, and belt-drive. Two well-spaced ratios keep you moving through city streets – no shifters, no cable, no adjustment.

On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Alex Moulton today revealed a revolutionary new bicycle design.

Codenamed “MDev 90″, the new design comprises a frame of carbon rods radiating from a central hub and clamped to the head tube and seat tube.

The frame can be assembled by a dealer, in a matter of minutes, with the customer present.

Alex Moulton described the MDev 90 as his “ultimate innovation of more than 50 years of my aspiration to make riding more pleasurable than the ‘classic’”.

The bicycle will be available in the customer’s choice of coloured anodized head tube and seat tube. The frontal aspect is described as “slimline”, which presumably means narrower Flexitors, compared with the Pylon models.

There are no details yet regarding the MDev 90 going into production. The press release stated “what I do with it, licensing or whatever, is not yet decided.”

While the MDev is revolutionary, it is instantly recognisable as a Moulton. It features all of the principle concepts that have marked Alex Moulton’s bicycles since their first launch in 1962, and have been phenomenally successful commercially and competitively.

Small wheels with high pressure tyres ensure low rolling resistance, excellent aerodynamics and low inertia, which allows faster acceleration than a typical large bicycle wheel. Unique Moulton Flexitor rubber suspension ensures maximum comfort and efficiency, while being maintenance free and frictionless.

Moulton bicycles have been successful in track and road racing, broken road records, and still maintain a 25 year old HPV speed record.

They are also frequently used on long distance Audax rides, and world tours, where luggage carrying capacity is an integral part of the design.

From The Guardian…

There was little sign of wallet tightening, particularly on the stand belonging to Moulton, the British manufacturer of full-suspension, small-wheeled bicycles. Pride of place was the £14,500 New Series Double Pylon, a shiny space-aged number with a silver-brazed frame made from stainless steel. Despite not yet being in production, the bike has already attracted a waiting list of 13 months, with demand particularly high in Japan. Shaun Moulton, great nephew of Alex Moulton, the brand’s inventor, was on hand to explain its merits. It is very light yet very strong, and the lack of paintwork means it is completely scratch-proof, apparently.

At the Moulton Bicycle Club weekend in Bradford on Avon in September, a newly built Moulton Mark 4 was shown, which is now in the Moulton Museum.

The Mark 4 was an evolution of the Mark 3 which had been produced by Raleigh from 1970 to 1974. The Mark 4 nearly went into production, before Raleigh pulled the plug on the Moulton line altogether.

There were previously only 3 known examples of the Mark 4 in existence, and each has a different spec. This new Mark 4 was built by Arthur Smith, using a frameset found at Bradford on Avon. This new Mark 4 also has a unique spec, but does boast authentic components from the relevant era.

Also featured in the pictures is another of the Mark 4 models in purple.

The Mark 4 was similar to the Mark 3, with additional features such as a stowaway joint for separability, and a swan neck stem.

Update: Some of the links below no longer work, but Velo Orange have the updated long reach Tektro R559 available in nutted or recessed versions on their website

Velo Orange have announced that they have commissioned Tektro to make some dual pivot caliper brakes with nut mounts. This style of brake has become more difficult to obtain in recent years, since the introduction of the recessed allen key fitting.

The “extra-long reach” Tektro R556 have a reach of 55-73mm, which will suit F-Frame Moultons with 16inch (349mm) wheels.

The “long reach” Tektro R538 (47 to 57mm) will suit older AM models, with 17 inch (369mm) wheels.

So many of you have been asking for nutted brakes to fit older frames that we asked Tektro to make some for us. This means that you can now easily convert older frames to modern dual pivot brakes without drilling out the fork crown and seat stay bridge.

We ordered the Tektro R538 (with a 47 to 57mm reach) and the Tektro R556 (with a 55 to 73mm reach) in traditional nutted versions. Both brakes are modern dual pivot designs with excellent stopping power. They both include re-fillable cartridge type brake shoes, barrel adjusters with O-rings, and cam type quick-releases. The finish is polished and anodized aluminum. The quality is equal to that on many much more expensive brakes.
