david jamesParticipantthere’s a set of f-frame “new”front forks on ebay at the moment which i suppose is really new old stock going for £155, am i alone in finding this ridiculous when you can buy a complete bike for that kind of money, some new bushes £20 max) and your forks are as good as new?
March 7, 2015 at 6:42 am #4470
CLIVE FENNERParticipantDon’t forget they do come with a “proper fork box”. What a bargain !
March 7, 2015 at 12:10 pm #4471Dan
ParticipantBack down to £31 now??
March 7, 2015 at 5:39 pm #4472
david jamesParticipantyeah back to £31, someone must have meant £15.50!
March 7, 2015 at 9:23 pm #4473
IanMemberThat shows that the current highest bidder has probably set a maximum bid of @£150 – an unscrupulous seller could shill bid that back up to the previous figure…… Yet another reason why you are daft to place bid on anything on ebay before the very end of the sale.
March 8, 2015 at 9:15 am #4474
IanMemberAnd predictably, this morning r***r (887) who placed their bid at ’03-Mar-15 23:02:48 GMT’ is still the highest bidder after f***l ( 9 ) put a bid of £69 on.
Really treating ebay as an ‘auction’ is madness for buyers. If you bid early you are likely to be outbid by another buyer looking to best your offer, unscrupulous sellers will place shill (fake) bids in an attempt to push the price up. The only sensible way to behave is consider what you think it is worth to you and place a bid in the last few seconds of the sale. If you win, you will be happy. If you lose you ought to be happy as you did not spend more than you intended.

david jamesParticipanttrue words unfortunately ebay seems to be the only play to get some parts, i bought a car on it last week on “buy it now” and the next day the seller withdrew it as she gave it to her sister who had trashed hers, meanwhile the other suitable vehicles i had in mind had all been sold!

MemberThere’s a rather interesting Moulton F-frame bike newly listed on ebay UK at the moment. It is described as ‘Classic Vintage Green Moulton Touring Bike’. By the looks of the chainwheel etc. it seems it may be an original Safari model, although the seller does not use the description Safari anywhere, perhaps they don’t know exactly what they are selling. It does seem to be arousing some iiterest now. Does anyone know if this is a genuine original Safari model?!
March 9, 2015 at 10:09 am #4477Dan
ParticipantYes it is a safari. The seller is being rather coy as she has sold lots of moulton bits, and she knows what she has.
March 9, 2015 at 10:17 am #4478
IanMemberIt’s not a Safari, unless you really want it to be……
Rusty guards? 4-speed and ‘Series 2’ forks? 36h wheels? Unbranded ‘alloy’ brakes? I suspect it is a Major made to look a bit like one.
A nice job and some folk might get mugged by bidding too much because of it – but I’m sure you know what I think about fools and their money being soon parted. 😉

ParticipantBrakes have GB Coureur stamped in them? red dot gb levers, unicanitor saddle,so who knows, ken reckoned it was legit.has potential but no doubt a dealer/taiwanese will hoover it up
March 9, 2015 at 12:56 pm #4480Alexander Johnston
ParticipantNot a Safari.
It’s a Major with alloy components.March 9, 2015 at 1:04 pm #4481Alexander Johnston
Participant1) The cable holes are positioned precisely as on a Major frame.
2) There is a hole about half an inch along the top tube from where it meets the steering tube. This is a feature of all Major frames and was where the wiring went to the rear light. (Lights were provided on the Major Deluxe but all Major frames have this hole).
3) The colour is a Major colour.March 9, 2015 at 2:16 pm #4482Alexander Johnston
ParticipantMe again.
Still potentially a nice bike though.
Raleigh certainly knew how to braze a frame. IHO although a bit heavy the Major frame is probably the best of the lot: strong rotated seat tube; strong fin front and rear forks; no issues with front forks; brazed frame and detachable rear rack.
Also the bike comes with some nice alloy components included drops.
Should fetch a good price but not a Safari price.March 9, 2015 at 2:35 pm #4483Dan
Participantbe interesting to see what it goes for,ive noticed majors generally fetch a little more, from a daily ride point of view they must be one of the best standard f frames
March 9, 2015 at 3:23 pm #4484
IanMemberIt might fetch a ‘Safari price’ if people think it is one Alexander! (But it isn’t)
March 9, 2015 at 3:50 pm #4485Dan
Participantcertainly some ideas there, the safari is one of my favourite f frames, but the sum of its parts is less than it as a whole, and a half decent replica done in the spirit of could be done quite cheaply
March 10, 2015 at 10:25 am #4486William Poole
MemberHi! Reading through the previous comments it’s possible to see that if this bicycle is NOT an original Safari model it has been put together by someone who knows their Moultons and the specification of the Safari in particular. It must be hoped that this sale is NOT calculated in some way to ‘catch out’ an unwary or uninitiated or inexperienced buyer!?
March 10, 2015 at 4:34 pm #4487
IanMemberI don’t think so. If they had wanted to do that, and get as much as they could, I think they would have been offering international shipping……! 😉
March 10, 2015 at 5:59 pm #4488Alexander Johnston
ParticipantHi William
Who knows?
Perhaps the seller’s father simply wanted a Safari lookalike.
It caught out at least several knowledgeable Moultoneers.March 14, 2015 at 11:57 am #4490William Poole
MemberHi! How much did the rather ‘infamous’ green bike go for in the end? The last time I saw it was in the price range IQ predicted.
March 14, 2015 at 5:21 pm #4491
CLIVE FENNERParticipantOnly £475
March 14, 2015 at 9:55 pm #4492
david jamesParticipantlook out for it being relisted when the buyer realises he bought something he didn’t want!
March 15, 2015 at 1:43 pm #4494William Poole
MemberHi Clive! Thanks. Perhaps £475 isn’t too bad for an enthusiast? built unoriginal, but fairly interesting, Moulton bike.
March 15, 2015 at 4:25 pm #4495
Les CrookMemberWilliam,
if that’s the case my enthusiast (?) built unoriginal Standard with 5 speed and drop bars is on offer for anything over £1000. :o)
